To get around Valparaiso there are several options. The favorite beaches in Valparaíso are those of Caleta Portales, which is right in the MetroTren Station, there are restaurants nearby where you can have lunch, you can also visit San Mateo beach or my favorite, Playa Las Torpederas
Valparaiso is not just Puerto and Cerros, you can also escape and enjoy the beach and the waves of the impressive Pacific Ocean, which as you may have noticed, is not as peaceful as its name says. There is another fair that I like and it’s the Antiques Market located in Plaza O’Higgins, just behind the National Congress. Tuesdays and Saturdays it’s a normal fair, with fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and fish, but on Sundays, it becomes a gigantic Flea Market where you can find practically everything you can think of! One of the must-see if you like fairs, is the one located on Avenida Argentina, on the same street where the Trolebuses station is and is more than 1500m in length!
Here is the house that housed Pablo Neruda in the underground when he was persecuted by the government of González Videla and that very few know. In the hill Bellavista, the Open Air Museum and La Sebastiana, home of the poet Pablo Neruda, deserve a special trip.Īn area is not part of the best-known tourist circuit of Valparaiso is the one that includes the Cerros Lecheros and Barón also has some beautiful corners to walk and explore, especially the murals of the Zenteno Population and the Lecheros elevator. You will find a sample of the colonial architecture of the area, as well as many restaurants and cafes where to spend the afternoon and some of the most interesting museums of the city, the House of Lukas, Paseo Yugoslavo, Astoreca Palace and the Baburizza Museum. The most touristic hills, but also the most cared and entertaining to my taste are Cerro Alegre and Concepción.
The most visited places in Valparaíso are the Barrio Puerto, where you can find the port, the Senate and the Naval and Maritime Museum, the Municipal of Fine Arts. There is a pyrotechnic show in more than 10 points in the bay, which continue even beyond Viña del Mar, being one of the largest in the country and South America, which marvels all who have lived this event in the area.Īlso unforgettable are the carnivals and the unforgettable Feast of the Thousand Drums that take place in the port. If you are in this area for year-end, living a New Year’s Eve in Valparaiso is an experience to live at least once in your life. Put on your more comfortable shoes, because you’re going to walk a lot and keep in mind that in the mornings and afternoons it can become chilly and windy even in summer. Valparaíso has a somewhat complicated layout to walk through, is located between the Pacific Ocean and the hills, so when walking around is a good idea to organize the route in advance not to walk more than its necessary. Walking and living for a few hours at the rhythm of the port will make your mind see with other eyes, colors, smells and sensations very different from those you will live in other places in Chile. In summer there are several cruises that arrive with tourists eager to discover its streets and taste the seafood delights. Unique architecture and location have declared Valparaíso’s city center a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. It has 95 national monuments and about 42 hills around the bay. The city develops between the Plan and the Hills, between land and sea, giving life to a vibrant and very entertaining city to visit.
